You know what else is a violation of god’s law? Taking god’s name in vain. Ezekiel 13:1-16 states that god will judge those who misrepresent him, and who claim to be speaking for him[1]. Right now, by claiming that you speak for god, you’re violating that law. And it’s not only a mere law, it’s also a commandment.

Look, you can apply whatever weird laws you want to yourself. Personally, I have a law that states that I’m only allowed to take an even number of steps each day, and that I must eat a bag of nuts each evening[2]. But I’m not going to come to your house and tell you how to walk and how many nuts to eat! Not everyone subscribes to your god, so you have no right to impose your own religious laws on other people, just like you don’t want other religious people to impose their laws on you.

But this isn’t really about what you think god wants, is it? You’re using the bible as an excuse for your own prejudices, selectively quoting the parts you happen to agree with. The old testament also states that you’re not allowed to shave your beard and that you must stone adulterers and disobedient children. It forbids wearing cloth made out of a mix of wool and linen. It states that women who have their period must not be touched for seven days. So, how many disobedient children have you stoned recently?

[1]: Or, presumably, her, or it, I’m not entirely clear on why god has a gender and what he/her/it would use it for; the bible doesn’t say anything about intergalactic orgies.

[2]: Not really. Half a bag is entirely acceptable.
